I am a sucker for all beauty products. No matter the store, I usually find myself in a corner swatching lip gloss, and 10 minutes later I’m out the door with a new nail polish. A couple of months ago, my tragic addiction led me to an entirely new realm: the grocery store. I saw a large display with every coconut product imaginable: shredded coconut, coconut water, coconut nail polish (kidding), and my eyes landed on a jar of coconut oil. My mind wandered to my mental index of Allure articles and recalled several uses for the $4 jar. “Can’t hurt, right?” Note: This is my usual thought process and it does not always end well. This purchase, on the other hand, ended very well. A quick Google search opened my eyes to the billions of uses for coconut oil, but here are a couple of my faves. To anyone who has seen My Big Fat Greek Wedding, coconut oil is my new Windex.
1. MOISTURIZE : Apply all over your body right before you get in the shower. Coconut oil not only locks in moisture, but it facilitates shaving and prevents razor burns. It may feel like there is a residual film when you get out of the shower, but once you towel dry your skin is so soft. I have been doing this for a couple of weeks and there is not only dry patch of skin on my body (take that, humidity).
2. HAIR MASK: Warning: There are a lot of things that can go wrong with a coconut oil hair mask. Apply the oil to the ends of your hair and steer clear of your roots. Put on a shower cap and allow the hair to absorb the oil for 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and condition.
3. CUTICLE SAVER: I have fallen victim to expensive cuticle creams, but coconut oil does the trick. I put a little on my cuticles every night before I go to bed and wake up to healthy nail beds.
The best part? The $4 price tag.
