Establish Your Evening Routine

We’re all guilty of falling asleep with a phone in hand or the drone of the Kardashians on the television. I’ve had my fair share of sleepless nights, which result in horrible moods and undesirable dark circles the next day. So, in an attempt to alleviate this personal crisis, I took to the trusty world wide web.

As expected, there are thousands of blogs dedicated to needs of the sleep deprived. Most of them are unrealistic, absurd, or both. Parachute Home’s Parachute Blog, however, is the diamond in the rough. Parachute is a fabulous home goods brand based in Venice Beach, and specialize is sheets and lifestyle essentials. Their products are beautiful, but their blog keeps me coming back for more. I can read about the bedtime rituals of J.Crew editors, or the importance of making your bed in the morning. I’ve constructed a little routine of my own, which I believe has resulted in better sleep.

1. Fresh Linens

To my fellow college students, please wash your sheets (at least) every two weeks. It’s not only the sanitary thing to do, but it makes crawling into bed much more enjoyable.

2. Essential Oils

This is a good one. Lavender is best for falling asleep, but Chamomile and Ylang Ylang have also been proven to help with relaxation. I have a little bottle of lavender oil by my bed, and dab a little on my wrists before bed.

3. Device Ban

Easier said than done, but I do believe this is the most essential step for great sleep. Most recommend an hour unplugged before bed, but for most that’s not practical. Trade out twenty minutes of Instagram browsing for a good book. You’ll be amazed at the difference in the quality of your ZZZs.

4. Tidy Space

A clean room = an eased mind = good sleep .

5. Clean Face

This should be a no brainer. A fresh face is an instant refresher, and will make you feel so much better when you wake up. [Bonus points if you can fit in a face mask.]

  1. Hey Sophia;

    I just finished reading your blog post. I loved it! It shares some of the same ideas I share in a simple guide I created called “The Art of Going to Bed- A Guide to Perfecting the Ritual of Bedtime for Better Sleep & Optimal Day Time Performance.”

    As a mom and new entrepreneur, I know how overwhelming life can get and this guide shares some of the simple bedtime practices that help me to settle down, settle in and sleep.

    I think it’s a cool supplement to your post. if you’re interested in sharing the link with your readers or would like to know more, just let me know and I’ll send it right over.

    Thanks,

    Robin-

  2. These are some great tips! I have trouble falling asleep myself. I think my sleep schedule is just messed up though. I’ve tried most of those things you’ve listed above. Thanks for sharing! 🙂 xo
